About the Game
Imagine: you are about to embark on an important expedition. Together with fellow inhabitants of Ashvolcano, an island that was once thriving and beautiful but has become almost uninhabitable in recent years since the volcano became active again, you are sent out to find a new place to live. A new future for the children! You have heard about the land of Silver Mountains, where the fields are in bloom, the air is pure and the soil is rich in sustainable resources. Everyone has their own goals to achieve along the way, but you are all on the same ship. Which route will you take? What will you encounter on the way? What do you pay attention to, and how do you collaborate? That is what The Expedition is all about.
The Expedition is a game designed to foster collaboration between different stakeholders (municipalities and school boards) in the Natural Gas-Free School projects. It allows stakeholders to get to know one another, to understand each other's perspectives, interests and ways of working, and thereby promote a lasting and positive collaboration. The game demonstrates that the parties embarking on a project together are, despite their differences in approach or working methods, pursuing the same dream and ambition: to collectively realise a natural gas-free school and thereby contribute to the energy transition and a sustainable environment.
The Expedition was created for Platform 31 in the context of the Innovation Programme for Natural Gas-Free and Healthy Primary Schools. This programme is made possible by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) and the Primary Education Council (PO-Raad).
For Platform 31, we also developed the serious game Transform!
Physical and digital:
The Expedition has been developed in two variants: a physical and a digital version. The physical version is played live, using real game materials (wooden playing pieces) and a large map (canvas) measuring 1.80 by 1.20 metres — ideal for gathering around. The digital version is an exact replica, but hosted within the collaboration tool Mural. Teams can then simultaneously track their actions on the map while consulting one another via Teams or Zoom.
