About the Game
Overview
InnovA58 is a cutting-edge viewer and serious game developed by the GameLab from The Hague University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with Game Tailors and commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management). The project serves as an interactive showcase and simulation tool for the Living Lab InnovA58, an innovation site located at the Kloosters rest area along the A58 highway in the municipality of Oirschot, Netherlands.
The Objective
The main goal of the project is to visualize and address environmental and infrastructural challenges within the Low Tech Campus, a 500-to-1000-hectare testbed surrounding the highway. This region heavily struggles with climate change effects that directly disrupt the local water balance. By turning this physical location into a "Digital Twin" (a virtual 3D replica), the serious game aims to make complex ecological and infrastructural dilemmas accessible and engaging for both the public and key decision-makers.
Gameplay & Features
The game is intended to be deployed in the official InnovA58 innovation pavilion, allowing highway users, local residents, and stakeholders to interact with it directly.
- Dynamic Simulation: Features a realistic 3D viewer depicting the highway and the Kloosters service area, complete with AI-driven traffic that drives, reacts, and overtakes dynamically.
- Interactive Showcase: Transitioning from an open-world exploration sandbox into a structured, highly usable showcase, the application guides users through the specific sustainable innovations being tested at the physical location.
- Climate & Water Management: Ongoing development cycles focus on visualizing the region's complex water-balance challenges, turning abstract climate data into clear visual impacts.
Educational & Professional Value
As a multi-year project, InnovA58 is iteratively expanded by successive teams of student developers and designers, with professional support from industry experts like Game Tailors. The ultimate goal of this serious game is to bridge the gap between technical data and public awareness, providing policymakers and project stakeholders with a powerful visual tool to co-create future-proof solutions for sustainable infrastructure.
