Job Description
Negative Damage is looking for a freelance 3D Character Artist to join us during the production of our first game.
We’re creating a stylized narrative game with a strong visual identity inspired by German Expressionism and noir. The characters we have in mind have no facial features, so personality and emotion need to come primarily from strong silhouettes, exaggerated proportions, clothing, posture and animation. We’re looking for someone who enjoys pushing character shapes beyond conventional human proportions and can help us establish a distinctive visual language for the cast.
The work includes creating a small number of unique key characters as well as a modular system for regular NPCs, using reusable bodies, clothing and accessories to create variety efficiently.
We’d ideally like someone who is comfortable with the full game-ready character pipeline and can work directly alongside the development team rather than simply delivering finished models. Experience with Unity, rigging, skinning, animation workflows, shaders/materials and implementation of game-ready characters is therefore a big plus.
You would work closely with our small team of game designers and programmers, with plenty of room to contribute creatively and help shape the final look of the game.
We’re looking for someone with experience in:
- Stylized 3D character modelling
- Strong silhouette and shape-language design
- Game-ready topology, UVs and texturing
- Modular character systems
- Rigging and skinning
- Unity and real-time game-development workflows
- Communicating and iterating as part of a small development team
Experience with highly stylized, caricatured, low-poly or otherwise unconventional character design is especially interesting to us. We care much more about strong artistic choices and character than high-fidelity detail.
This is a paid freelance position for a defined production period, working remotely with our team in the Netherlands.
When applying, please include your portfolio, availability, preferred rate (hourly/day rate or project-based), and a short introduction to the kind of work you enjoy doing.
